I did the Big Mac thing.. but I just randomly took some figure of 14 billion from 1996. My guess is that number referred to total BMacs sold throughout history and NOT for that single year. Mainly, 20 billion Big Macs is equal in calories or joules to "Little Boy" the 13 kiloton bomb dropped on Hiroshima. There are 600 calories in a Big Mac (I believe.) So, there are 12 quadrillion (?) calories in 20 billion Big Macs. This is roughly equal the energy output of "Little Boy"
It's easy to figure out.. the hard part is finding how many Big Macs are consumed in a given year.
600 billion in 1998. My guess is that it's over 700 million, now.
Well I called McDonalds and they told me they only have records of how many burgers they sell, and they have sold over 100 billion since their inception. Just using this number alone, and figuring the average burger is worth calorically the value of a cheese burger (330cal) I came up with 33 megatons of burgers. Add medium fries and a medium coke and that number goes up to 89 megatons (890 calories per meal). The bomb that was released over Hiroshima was the equivalent of a 15 kiloton expolsive, thus in burgers alone, McDonalds have ravaged the population by droppong 2200 Hiroshima sized bombs on humans.
Add fries and a coke and it goes up to 5933 Hiroshimas.
So taking this a little more into the fantasy realm, 70,000 people died in the attack on Hiroshima... thus in burger bombs McDonalds have the power to kill 154 million people.
Add fries and a coke, and they have killed 415 million people.
Of course one must consider extra ketup for fries (10cal), the Quarter Pounders (540cal) and the Big Mac(600cal), and above all others, the SUPER Size, only large fries (520cal) and large coke (310) information are available at this time.

PS the ammusing addition is to note how the burger/combo cals listed above convert to megatons so nicely.
Oh, remember McDonalds only claims to have the market share of a little above 20% of the fast food industry.
I re-did your calculations and 600cal * 16billion =9.6e12 cal. which converts to 9.6 megatons. 9600 kilotons divided by 15kilotons (estimate I got for the Hiroshima bomb) you end up with 640 hiroshima sized bombs. So am I missing something? Are you using Nutritional Calories or regular calories? 1 Nutritional calorie = 4,186.8 joules while a standard calorie = 4.1868 joules.
yah, I didn't know about the "food calorie" thing.. I guess.. multiply my results by 1,000 and that'll translate it appropriately.
so.. if say.. the US has consumed 20 billion Big Macs.. then that's equivalent to around 1,000 Hiroshima-esque nuclear bombs going off in the USA. 200 million Big Macs would equal around 10 Hiroshima bombs.
